COPENHAGEN TO INTRODUCE SUNDAY PARKING CHARGES AND HIGHER RATES FROM
APRIL 1ST

Motorists wishing to leave their car in Copenhagen are set to pay more
for the privilege as the city implements paid parking on Sundays and
new rates from April 1st.

Changes to parking rules will mean that rates across the city
(excluding the separate municipality of Frederiksberg, which operates
its own parking rules), will go up, except for resident permit
holders..

For example, the price in the “green” parking zone will increase
from 25 kroner to 44 kroner per hour.

Additionally, only the first hour of parking on Sundays will remain
free. That means a major change from the current free parking
throughout Sundays, with no charges applied for parking between 5pm on
Saturday and 8am on Monday.

The outgoing prices for daytime parking are 43 kroner (red zone), 25
kroner (green), 16 kroner (blue), 12 kroner (yellow), with the more
expensive zones broadly covering central or congestion areas.

Under the new rates, both the red and green zones will cost 44 kroner
per hour, the blue zone 26 kroner and the yellow zone 16 kroner per
hour. A flat rate of 17 kroner per hour will apply in all zones
between 6pm and 11pm, and 6 kroner per hour from 11pm-8am.

A map of the parking zones and parking rates in Copenhagen can be
found on the Copenhagen Municipality website.

Elected official Line Barfod, who heads the city council’s Public
Works administration (teknik- og miljøforvaltning) said she hopes the
move will encourage more visitors to the city to use public transport
or bicycles.

"Cars take up a lot of space when parked, and space is limited in a
city like Copenhagen. That’s why it’s best used for residents who
need a car," she said in a Copenhagen Municipality press release.

Paid parking could also help reduce air pollution, Barfod added.

Around 72,000 public parking spaces within Copenhagen’s paid parking
zones will be affected according to the press release.

Paid parking in Copenhagen and throughout Denmark generally requires
the use of a parking meter or a parking app.

Drivers must still register their parking even if parking for less
than an hour on Sundays and therefore not incurring any charge.
